Balaam is a unique figure in the Old Testament. Sometimes, he serves the Lord, and sometimes he opposes Him. He seems to live with a general sense of apathy toward the people and plans of God. He is easily swayed by his own desires. He’s a prophet who speaks on behalf of God, but he does so almost begrudgingly. Literally, it takes a discussion with a donkey to convince him to be obedient to the Lord. Balaam’s apathy blinds him to the mission and movement of God. Like Balaam, we all need God to open our eyes to what we cannot see.
