Samson was strong. That began even before his birth, when an angel appeared to his parents who had tried unsuccessfully to have children. The child that God promised to them was to be set apart for God his whole life and would begin to deliver Israel from the oppressive Philistines. Samson’s life was built on God and God’s promises, and that was the source of his true strength. As Samson grew up, his strength grew with him. There was no doubt that this man who killed a lion with his bare hands and who carried city gates for miles was strong. But he was also weak. Samson was violent, prideful, sexually immoral, and vengeful. These were his weaknesses, and they led to the loss of his strength. But on Samson’s final day—defeated, humiliated, weak—he prayed for strength one more time, and God provided. In Samson’s weakness, God was strong.
