Sex. It’s one of the first activities humans ever engaged in, it’s even been called the oldest profession, it’s widely talked about in pop-culture, music, and movies, and it’s even one of the most thought about subjects! BUT, really talking about sex can feel so awkward and uncomfortable, especially in the church. And there’s a long history there. God created us, he created sex, and it started out good. So, what went wrong? Sexuality is a driving thread in our culture. It’s flinging across apps on our phones, in every show we watch, and in almost every piece of content that we consume. And as our flippant intake increases, the value, depth, and beauty actually decreases.
At Southeast, we want to help undo some of the lies we’ve heard from culture, but also the church to see what it really looks like to be discipled by Jesus when it comes to our sexuality. Matthew 28 helps us understand that a disciple is someone who is becoming increasingly committed to following his teachings and his patterns. A person being discipled by Jesus, therefore, is becoming more like Him in every facet of life, even the areas that we may not think of as “spiritual”. So then, being a disciple of Jesus should transform what we do with our bodies and how we view sexuality. In this series, we’re going to have a candid conversation about how we’re being discipled by the world to think about sex and sexuality and compare it against the very words of God, the creator of our bodies.
