With the destruction of the Temple by the Babylonians around 587 BC, Jerusalem changed from being a city filled with life, purpose, and joy to one blanketed with loneliness, pain, and suffering. The heartache detailed in Lamentations is reminiscent of that in the world today. Invasions—through physical loss, unmet expectations, or by our own doing—continue, leaving us feeling anything but thankful. Yet, God shows us through His Word that true gratitude comes not in minimizing heartache, but in maximizing God’s heart.
