An automobile manufacturer designs their cars to be used a certain way, but you don’t have to follow their plan. You can put orange juice in the gas tank. You don’t have to change your oil. Driving on four flat tires is an option. But if you go against its design, your car will pay a price. It will quickly break down and ultimately become unusable.
God designed us to do life in a certain way, but he gives us the decision. Paul writes, “Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish
thinking and let them do things that should never be done” (Romans 1:28). As people choose their desires and so abandon God and his design, they become increasingly sinful, and they will pay a price. In fact, later in Romans, Paul says that by turning away from God and his design, people “become useless” (Romans 3:12).
