Joseph had just been told news that would change his world forever, Mary was pregnant through the Holy Spirit. This news changed everything- the way people looked at Mary and Joseph, his family dynamics, and even his immediate community’s perspective of him. And in the midst of so many unexpected circumstances, it was hard for Joseph to see what God was doing. With the hindsight of the Old and New Testament, we can see God’s promise of Jesus…but in that moment for Joseph it was stressful, overwhelming, and completely unexpected. As he found himself at odds with what to do, an angel came to reassure Joseph that God was keeping His promises regardless of what it may seem, he just needed to trust the message. And this promise is what we see echo throughout Scripture- God’s Word never returns empty, His promises are sure, and regardless of what comes our way, we can place our trust in Him.
